Describe the social environment of the classroom
Mr. Salazar has a well-organized silent classroom. Students are expected to work silently on independent assignments and are free to talk and move around the classroom when students are asked to work in pairs. Students will often work silently while working on individual assignments and will hardly ask questions. When students are asked to work in partners or in groups of three students are more vocal and more social. While there are times when the students discuss things off topic, they will still be working on what is expected of them. Students ask more questions when they are in groups. Mr. Salazar will incorporate popular culture when explaining concepts or instructions to labs to have the students relax and understand they are capable of the task at hand. Mr. Salazar’s classroom reflects his calm and quiet personality.
Ms. Cabrera has a classroom that can be described as organized chaos. She allows students to discover the scientific method through hands on activities and very little lecture. Students are given the language they are expected to be using as engineers and scientist. Students are more vocal about what they are supposed to be doing. Students are encouraged to do things visually by creating posters and project-based learning. Students hardly work quietly and will often be doing work while socializing. Ms. Cabrera’s classroom reflects her energetic personality.
While both teachers have different social environments, both have high preforming students and low performing students. Both teachers play to their strengths and to their teaching personalities. It also demonstrates that different social environments are also based on the types of students in the class.
